Over the last few years, the term “polyphenol” has become a recurring buzzword across research articles, health blogs and nutrition conversations. Working closely with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), it was brought to our team’s attention that the phrase “polyphenols” is not the most accurate term for the health-supportive phenolic compounds found in EVOO.

So which term is?

The answer is…active biophenols!

This phrase encapsulates a subclass of polyphenols and monophenols (previously excluded with the term “polyphenol”) that actively interact with the body once consumed.1, 2

Whilst this is a very small change, in nutrition and health science we value molecules that can significantly support health as it helps justify food recommendations. Understanding the difference between the two terms will strengthen the accuracy of nutrition research and help identify genuine gaps in the literature.

For this reason, using the correct terminology — especially in health communication, academic writing and EVOO research — helps improve clarity for both professionals and consumers.

What about the term Antioxidants?

Often mistakenly referred to as a noun rather than verb, the term ‘antioxidant’ defines the action of the molecule not the type. For example, vitamin E is a “vitamin” that has “antioxidant activity”. Many active biophenols also have significant antioxidant capacity, allowing them to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.2

  • All biophenols are polyphenols (or monophenols), but not all polyphenols are referred to as active biophenols – especially if they lack biological activity or are synthetically derived.
